			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>With the rise in popularity and hence, commercialism of the hip-hop subculture nowadays, the urban lifestyles various facets have naturally been pushed into the mainstream. Not without the help of MTV and its various offshoots, a lifestyle that just a few years ago was still underground is now common fodder for soft-drink commercials, billboard ads and even NBA games. It&#8217;s not uncommon nowadays to ask a 50 year old Caucasian farmer from the Midwest who The Fresh Prince is and get a correct answer.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s only natural then that the street arts that make-up the backbone of hip-hop has also gained international pop attention. Graffiti writing, break-dancing, rapping and beat-boxing used to be confined to the urban ghettos of the main cities of America like New York and Los Angeles. Now spray-painted (aerosol) art can be seen on the walls of Berlin, national break-dancing competitions in Seoul are televised globally, and rappers are a dime a dozen in the cities of the Philippines. One can truly say hip-hop has gone pop when Iraqi kids scramble to get their hands on posters of 50cent. The saying &#8220;music knows no boundaries&#8221; becomes a colossal understatement indeed in light of this.</p>
<p>&#8216;Deejaying&#8217; or the more accurate term- turntablism, is one of the last nuances of hip-hop to come out of the urban jungles of America. DJ Babu of the world-famous Beat Junkies (an award-winning turntablist crew) defines a turntablist as &#8220;one who uses the turntable in the spirit of a musical instrument&#8221;. Still, a more detailed definition- &#8220;a musician: a hip-hop disc jockey who in a live/spontaneous situation can manipulate or restructure an existing phonograph recording to produce or express a new composition that is unrecognizable from its original ingredients.&#8221; The word hip-hop was said to have been coined from the way early turntablists &#8216;hopped&#8217; from one turntable to another in a &#8216;hip&#8217; fashion during live shows with rappers. Indeed, the DJ has come a long way from being a rapper&#8217;s sidekick during hip-hop&#8217;s infancy. Now they can be seen playing in rock bands like Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit and Incubus- packing stadiums throughout the globe with their fusion of rock and hip-hop music.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>This Hip Hop Legend is still Public Enemy #1&#8230; The hardest, political, Black Power music group in the 80&#8242;s &#8211; &#8217;90&#8242;s was, hands down, Public Enemy. Public Enemy, or &#8220;P.E.&#8221; for short, is composed of many people, but the main members are: Chuck D, Flavor-Flav, Professor Griff, Terminator X, Harry Allen, Hank Shocklee, and Bill Stephney. They met in the early &#8217;80&#8242;s at Adelphi University and at local musical events around the Long Island, NY area. Chuck D, the main voice of the group, is credited with being the common link among the many members as he was quite known on campus as a talented artist studying graphic design as well as a DJ at WBAU.</p>
<p>Much of the success of the group revolves around the contrast of personalities/ images among the three most visible members: Chuck D, Flava-Flav, and Prof. Griff. Prof. Griff was the leader of a security team called, &#8220;The Unity Force&#8221; and would sometimes be hired by Chuck D to work at the local parties he was deejaying. Chuck D and Flav practiced their unique routines together while working part-time delivering furniture for Chuck D&#8217;s father&#8217;s store in Laurelton, Queens. The idea for Flav&#8217;s introduction segments were inspired by the James Brown/ Bobby Bird technique as well as famous Philly rappers Schooly D and Cold Money.</p>
<p>P.E.&#8217;s first album, &#8220;Yo! Bum Rush the Show&#8221; was released in 1987; but it wasn&#8217;t until their second album, &#8220;It takes a Nations of Millions to Hold Us Back&#8221;, that they achieved recognition and celebrity status. This album, a genuine classic, is still not outdated today. This album shocked and petrified the mainstream audience calling Minister Louis Farrakhan &#8220;a prophet&#8221;. This innovative mix of free jazz, hard funk, even musique concrète by their producing team, the Bomb Squad created a sound unlike anything that came before.</p>

<p>Smooth introductions that are succinct work in everyone’s favor. Many professional speakers will bring you and/or send you a written introduction. Take time to read it over and check with the speaker on the pronunciation of any of the words that are unfamiliar to you &#8212; making notes on the pronunciation. If the speaker(s) you will be introducing hasn’t handed you an introduction, conduct a mini-interview and write down what you plan to say. Just “winging it” or going on and on about how long you’ve known old Joe and what a good guy he is, will give him a disadvantage.</p>
<p>Smooth transitions are a necessity. A proficient emcee realizes the importance of transitions and handles them with ease. When there are two or more speakers and/or other parts included in the program, the emcee must work to keep the mood on an even keel. For example, if the first speaker ended his or her presentation on an emotional note, the emcee needs to bring the audience back to a neutral frame of mind, otherwise the next speaker will start with a disadvantage. Transitions should not be lengthy. They can consist of a positive comment, a quote (have many ready), a short story that relates, or a chance for everyone to stand up and stretch.</p>
<p>It is the emcee’s job to keep the program moving on time. Even though the speaker(s) have been given a time schedule, not every presenter stays within the limit. It will be your responsibility as the emcee to keep everyone on time. Before you start, tell them that you will give them a signal when they have five, three and one minutes left, and stress that the time schedule is important for the success of the program. If they are going way past their time, you might have to gracefully take to the stage. As emcee, keep your comments as short as possible.</p>

This well-known music genre is made up of two components, rapping and record scratching. Rapping is also known as MCing and DJing, which comprises of audio mixing. These two main components combined with graffiti and break dancing form the four core elements of hip-hop.</p>
<p>The origin of hip-hop can be traced back as far as the ancient tribes in Africa. Rap has been compared with the chants, drumbeats and foot-stomping African tribes performed before wars, the births of babies, and the deaths of kings and elders. Historians have reached further back than the accepted origins of hip-hop. It was born as we know it today in the Bronx, cradled and nurtured by the youth in the low-income areas of New York City.</p>
<p>Fast-forward from the tribes of Africa to the ghettos of Kingston, Jamaica in the late sixties. The impoverished of Kingston gathered together in groups to form DJ conglomerates. They spun roots and culture records and communicated with the audience over the music. At the time, the DJ&#8217;s comments weren&#8217;t as important as the quality of the sound system and its ability to get the crowd moving. Kool Herc grew up in this community before he moved to the Bronx.</p>
<p>During the late sixties, reggae wasn&#8217;t popular with New Yorkers. As a DJ, Kool Herc spun rhythm and blues records to please his party crowd. But, he had to add his personal touch. During the breaks, Herc began to speak to his audience as he had learned to do in Jamaica. He called out, the audience responded, and then he pumped the volume back up on the record. This call and response technique was nothing new to this community who&#8217;d been reared in Baptist and Methodist churches where call and response was a technique used by the speakers to get the congregation involved. Historians compare it to the call and response performed by Jazz musicians and was very much a part of the culture of Jazz music during the renaissance in Harlem.</p>
<p>Others copied Herc&#8217;s style. Soon a friendly battle ensued between New York DJs. They all learned the technique of using break beats. Herc stepped up the game by giving shout-outs to people who were in attendance at the parties and coming up with his signature call and response. Other DJs responded by rhyming with their words when they spoke to the audience. More and more DJs used two and four line rhymes and anecdotes to get their audiences involved and hyped at these parties.</p>
<p>One day, Herc passed the microphone over to two of his friends. He took care of the turn table and allowed his buddies to keep the crowd hyped with chants, rhymes and anecdotes while he extended the breaks of different songs indefinitely. This was the birth of rap as we know it. Hip-hop has evolved from the days of the basement showdowns to big business in the music industry. In the seventies and eighties, the pioneers and innovators of the rap record was the DJ. He was the guy who used his turntable to create fresh sounds with old records. Then, he became the guy who mixed these familiar breaks with synthesizers to produce completely new beats. Not much has changed in that aspect of hip-hop.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>In the United States, graffiti is primarily associated with the explosion of urban gangs in the late 1960&#8242;s and 1970&#8242;s in South Bronx, Washington Heights and other impoverished neighborhoods of New York City. Starting with the major urbanization of many areas in the post-war period of the 20th century, urban gangs of young teenagers produced graffiti murals and covered the city with self-invented stylized signatures of names, known as tags, to mark their territory. Although this was not a new practice to the city, graffiti gained extensive consideration viewed as a way to challenge the system and express social manifestation.</p>
<p>Near the end of the 20th century, non-gang related graffiti was practiced for the sake of personal promotion and increased reputation. In some cases, artists performed extremely elaborate murals only to pay their respects to a deceased person. Such graffiti occurred after the deaths of Tupac Shakur and The Notorious B.I.G. In this context, for the first time, hip hop graffiti and gang graffiti were differentiated, at least in the minds of those who could spot the differences.</p>
<p>Hip hop graffiti is a means of self-expression and creativity rather than a way of gang demonstration. In the mid-1970s new music and dance forms emerged in Bronx and Brooklyn as a result of experimentation of black youth with new sounds, and neighborhood block parties. With the emergence of DJ’ing and breakdancing, graffiti pieces involved highly stylish letter-forms drawn with markers, or puzzling, multi-colorful spray paint murals on walls, buildings, and subways.</p>
<p>Together these music, language, graffiti and clothing embraced a new cultural fact, a new massive reality, ultimately a rich mix of creative practices that became known as hip hop. Eventually, many of these self-educated graffiti artists became well-known graphic designers working for Snoop Dogg, Run-DMC, Buddy Esquire, Spike Lee, Dapper Dan, designing album covers, sportswear, stage backdrops and great logos.</p>
<p>Hip hop graffiti is not vandalism as many people wrongly believe. Another element that differentiates graffiti artists from gang graffiti is that hip hop graffiti is constantly improved with new additions in its techniques. In contrast, the function of gang graffiti is mostly related to marking territorial boundaries and, therefore does not require, neither presupposes artistic intent. Those who differentiate between tagging and graffiti generally view tagging as gang-directed or vandalism-oriented with vulgar meaning and extremely controversial to encompass public value.</p>

<p>When you start off on your beat making journey, you might get a little overwhelmed with all the options that you have at your disposal. You can literally do anything with your beats, imparting any flavor or twist you might want to (that&#8217;s why it&#8217;s a creative and highly rewarding field). Of course, that&#8217;s not the way to really go about becoming great at beat making; a far better route would be to pick one style &#8211; say East Coast beats &#8211; and sticking with it until you learn all the tricks of the trade.</p>
<p>One obvious consideration for any aspiring beat maker is equipment. Too many wanna-be beat producers never let their dream materialize because of some deep belief that you need the best equipment and the most expensive software with the craziest set up to make great beats. This is, of course, untrue. You can start off with a little less than a hundred dollars and make beats that sound more than professional, provided you know what equipment to purchase.</p>
